cherry coke, jim henson & alex nut ;)

Midweek mix for your ass, or rather your ears unless of course you can hear with your rectum, which could be the subject of entirely different post…anyhoo music in the mix courtesy of Alex Nut (who is down at Fabric this Friday) these are the sounds and styles he’s feeling right now, in his own words ‘if you like cherry coke and Jim Henson then you will be feeling it too’ :)   Listen.download.enjoy.share :0)

Don’t Tour That Episode 19 up on DontWatchThat.tv featuring one of Manchesters finest team Strategy from Broke n £nglish, ABSOLUTELY WRECKS IT IN THE SHADOWS OF OLD TRAFFORD, ‘i might go for the salad but hold the tomato!’ ‘eating emcees like carrot cakes, cause to me he sounds weak like Gareth Gates!’ as always relevant and random lines for days Strats, the flow is ridiculous!

this weekend in manchester!

Work It Flyer

Work It absolutely smashed it last summer when it journeyed up the M1 from Visions Videos in London to The Deaf Institute in Manchester for some retro 90′s partying. Perfect timing then that the girls and crew are back in town a week after my birthday  as it means i can hijack the event as a belated birthday party in my hometown! Will be doing a quick DJ set of my favourite tracks from the decade i lost my virginity in…so come down preferably in harem pants and bandage dresses for Part 2 of Work It – Manchester

Pete Philly & Perquisite

So i finally met my lil bro Harry Vah, he stayed over with the Qemists in Antwerp. Was mad fun hanging with him, we talked about our hearts, life and lots of music. This group he played me and instantly i was hooked, hailing from Holland Pete Philly & Perquisite have that old school hip-hop sound, live instruments, pianos, flutes, positive vibes and laid back flows. Their mission is to bring analog sounds back in times of plastic, you gotta love em. I downloaded their album Mystery Repeats from Itunes after hearing just one track from it on their myspace, I dare you not to do the same esp. if your an old skool hip-hop lover!

Channel Two ft N’fa – Universal King

I know i know, i’ve posted this before and not to long ago but me nah care! I thinks its a perfect song for the day seeing as the infamous himself woke me up this morning (11.54 technically it was morning, yes the first time this week!) and forced me to… (more…)

Song F.T. Day – NFA

Youtube djin a gwarn over here in Tokyo, tame afterparty in Leon Q’s room after the Ninjatune scrannathon has seen a myriad of styles and tastes searched and played for all in attendance. Reactions have been straight up hate from my fellow Canadians Thunderheist, love for the weird and technologically broke from Yppah and good old fashioned rock out by the Qemists on Red Fang…however after pissing each other off with the song genres we decided to start choosing dope ass videos that would please everyone. This was my little gem all the way from OZ part of the previously blogged DreamKatchers, N’fa. Strictly for us those who love this “artform hearts worn on our sleeve!”

Its all about the flow…

Foreign hip-hop, i love it and finally i found someone else who does too. Late friday night, Saturday morning round at Mr Reasons house on the old youtube i showed him Notkea Rotte and The Russians he fired back with a nice Italian selection which i was far too drunk to remember the name of (please post links if you know of any). Now i dont know if he understands what their saying cause to be honest i certainly don’t but we both agreed its not about understanding every lyric its more about the flow. (more…)

Notkea Rotte – Bangkok here we come!

I like Norwegian Hip-Hop from Jenna G on Vimeo.

I love me some foreign hip-hop and down under i found out about a whole host of funky sounding people i’d never heard of before. Christmas day on the beach and Jesse from Norway introduced me to Flexible Rat aka Notkea Rotte and their rather catchy song Täältä tullaan Bangkok (Bangkok, Here We Come)! Ok i can only understand the chorus but the backing track is catchy as hell, plus after listening to some of their other stuff their flow on this is ridiculous, Norwegian ain’t that easy to rhyme in ya know! Couldn’t find a video online suitable enough to share with you on here, so i made one myself!

Enjoy Jenna Ration G

In the studio down under – The Dreamkatchers

2 & fro

Managed to do some work over here, in between sunbathing, drinking and eyeing up the locals. Got in the studio with Aussie hip-hop duo The Dreamkatchers who have some dope music out with more on the way. I sung a little hook and ting n ting for a track of theirs in the making called ‘Fast and Slow’, was a really fun afternoon hanging in the burbs of Melbourne, drinking stubbys, eating Golden Gaytimes, lemon pasta and making the most of my husky voice….if you haven’t heard of The Dreamkatchers before, well you soon will check out the self made uber cool video above and fall in love with the smooth like chocolate vocal skills of these two ex models…..yeah i know it was a hard session ;)

Crank dat election!

Just another example of election fever sweeping the states ahead of the big day on Tuesday. This is f**king amazing, their kids, sorry children and their singing about politics! We never got this involved in anything more than an assembly or Martin Luther King memorial in my high school. Lyrics smack it and give you the complete run down on McCain & Obama’s policies, a lot easier than reading the papers!! Its Edutainment at is best and i bet you’ll be singing along by the second chorus, heres the guide sheet!

CHORUS
Obama on the left
McCain on the right
We can talk politics all night
And you can vote however you like
You can vote however you like, yeah

Russian Hip Hop – Город Дорог (клип)

Couple weeks back i was in Moscow, thanks to WODNB. After the gig, wide awake in the hotel room im waiting for room service, cheeseburger & chips, standardly and theres only two choices of entertainment seeing as a hadn’t brought an adaptor for my Mac! BBC News or MTV Russia :(   Music won as murder, death, credit crunch is so boring compared to preened pop effergies. It was the usual cheese fest, until this little beauty sent me on a google trail, thats took me 2 weeks to complete. Mostly because of the spelling being in Russian and i could figure out how to type it in me mac ;p

Город Дорог (клип) ?

Foreign hip-hop (ie non english vocab) i love it! The right delivery in any language to me sounds slick, sexy, strong and gets the message across, a true test of artistic phrasing, if i can get it but i dont speak your language…your a poet! On the real though this tune was a nice surprise, bit of slap n tickle verbally me thinks, the hooks sung a little dodgy at times but i love the 90′s vibe in the sample and their whole delivery. First rapper is mad cute, hands off western women i seen him first, lol,  second looks like Nic (esp at 1.45, dont even lie) and the third proves New Era caps and a hoody can make you look the same as someone you’ve never seen 4,000 miles away! When i finally found this video i found a load more links to more underground tracks, Баста is a defnate favourite on youtube. Russian hip-hop just got themselves a new fan, you gon join the crew?

The Wackness is all good!

 The Wackness out 29th August

Just got back from a screening (at the very rude Soho House) of this film out the end of the month and im in love with Josh Peck. Had a vague idea that this film was about the NYC hip-hop scene in the 90′s due to the poster and an even vague-er press release attached…and was wrong. Had absolutely no idea who Josh Peck was before but rightfully fell in love with his perfect portrayl of Lucas Shapiro, Luke for short, a weed dealer who doesn’t rap unless its along to his walkman. Thats right people we’re talking cassettes, Illamatic, pagers not mobiles, Notorious B.I.G & Tupac being friends, Kurt Cobain killing himself, 40 O’s, the words dope/mad luv, a whole heap of weed and loads more good stuff from the year critics call the greatest in hip-hop…1994, oh and a dam good film.

Superbly written by Jon Levine inspiring amazing performances from Ben Kingsley as the best shrink ever and Josh Peck as my ideal geek, but not so much Method Man, who should have left the Jer-may-can accent at the door. Its got a very nostalgic soundtrack for those in the 18-35 bracket that you cant help but sing along to, this instant cult classic is exactly what i was crying out for in one my previous posts. It might not be an out an out comedy homage to the green but its a beautiful film with marijuana and hip-hop connecting the characters (alongside unsual friendships and life sucking) and i can’t wait to see it again when its released. Theres some absolute classic lines that had us cringing and laughing out loud, a great contrast to the bleaker moments we have to watch these characters deal with. Think American Beauty or Garden State meets Juno or just go and watch it and appreciate the goodness of The Wackness. Sent me on a great trip down memory lane..94 a big year, for me anyways ;)

Hip Hop Video Classic’s

Am up late watchin MTV Base Takeover of all things…its like Yo MTV Raps without the cool ID’s in between the videos.
Their playing some pretty dope tracks, alot of 90′s classic. I even got on down with my bad self to Arrested Development…the two arm African skank…you know the one!

Anyways its crazy the stuff they got away with back in the day in terms of visuals…theres no way you could make a video nowadays with full body bags, desert eagles, working bongs or whatever else you might fancy, that actually would get played on the popular music channels!

Mostly this is due to heavy censorship, thanks to all us hip hop fans running round selling crack, gang banging and gatting people. We spoiled it for todays street poets who now have to bargin with video commissioners and music execs on if they can be smoking on camera, let alone brandish a steel baseball bat during every chorus in a ominous beat down shot…however it didn’t mean a thing but a chicken wing back in the day.
