Invasion Detection – Round One

Space Invader Chorlton St

So a little later than planned thanks to more rain i headed out with my hungover house mate on a Space Invader art hunt round my home town this evening. Space Invader Canal Street Lock

Was alot more difficult than i expected and took us two hours to find 15 out of the 47 original pieces put up around Manchester in 2004 by the annonymous french invader. We spent a good 20 minutes in the failing light looking around chinatown for two pieces one of which no longer exsists and the other we couldn’t find at all…below is space where one used to be but where was the other marked above it on the map? Any one got any ideas?

The thing is the map, available to download from his website, that details where all the tiled creations are around town doesn’t have any road names on it and in some cases it doesn’t even have the roads marked on the map, just the four train stations.

Was fun though in full spy mode figuring out the unmarked streets and then searching buildings and alleys for a little mosaic splash of colour. My favorite finds had to be this little fella hiding at one end of canal street, just when we were about to give up he peaked out from behind the post!

And this one on Whitworth St, didnt expect it to be so big, ha ha i’ve driven down this road so many times and never seen this, amazing!

So many more to find and im definitely gonna go in on round two next time i have a few hours to chill in my hometown, definitely recommend doing a Space Invader hunt if your ever in Manchester or one of the other 35 cities worldwide that have been invaded, download all the maps from his website!
